Falling Ball Viscometer Technical Description Using the unit, the dynamic viscosity of a liquid can be determined. A steel ball sinks to the floor in a full measuring cylinder. By measuring the sink velocity with the aid of a stopwatch, the viscosity of the liquid can be calculated, given that the radius of the ball is known. Along with the measurement section and 5 steel balls, the experimental set-up includes a magnet for retrieving the balls after the experiment. Experiments can be performed using liquids with a viscosity that permits laminar flow.
